Disclosure: as a foreigner, I admit perhaps I shouldn't be talking shit about American politics. However I do not think my nationality will make my point any less valid by itself.
The lack of agreement between both major parties is hilarious, almost like they're trying hard to keep the feud burning. I wonder if such discussions would be less polarizing if other parties also had seats in the Senate. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this account).
Also, excuse me, but shutting down the government in order to pay for the military overseas is hilarious. How can bankrupcity not be a bigger threat than...than what exactly?

I think you hit the nail on the head. Both parties feel they can gain votes in the next election by taking a "principled stand" on the issues. The Democrats will blame the Republicans, and the Republicans will blame the Democrats, and the only losers are the electorate. I believe the only thing they are honestly concerned about is their own reelection.
